Policymakers & partnerships

We know that partnerships and collaboration are essential to achieving our sustainability commitments.

That’s why we work closely with our value chain partners including our suppliers and the broader ecosystem to collectively unlock value and improve our impact.

This includes engaging in cross-sector partnerships that enable us to solve shared systemic problems and drive a positive effect that is greater than if we acted alone.

We are part of several multi-stakeholder organizations which are tackling challenging topics that require
collective action, including the:

We also partner directly with expert organizations on specific projects or initiatives that support our sustainability commitments. You can see the full list of the partners we worked with in 2024 in our latest Sustainability Report here.

We believe regenerative agriculture holds the long-term potential to deliver greater food security for consumers as well as anticipated profitability for farmers. Despite the significant potential, the transition has been slow.

The regenerative farming growth rate must triple to reach 40% of global cropland and deliver against the planet’s need to limit climate change to 1.5 degrees. [5]

McCain has contributed to the Sustainable Agriculture Initiative Platform’s work to develop an industry-wide framework.

The SAI Platform’s ‘Regenerating Together’ programme offers a globally aligned definition of regenerative agriculture. The framework sees over 30 agriculture cooperatives, industry giants and the broader 170-strong SAI Platform membership align on a global standard for regenerative agriculture.

SAI Platform has established an aligned approach to agriculture that aims to help mitigate the impact of climate change, improve soil health, support biodiversity, retain water in the soil and reduce water use while keeping farmers’ business viability central in a just transition approach.

The Regenerating Together Framework can be viewed here.

In 2023, McCain supported a report by the think tank Demos which explored the benefits of and the barriers to the adoption of regenerative agriculture, and provided independent policy recommendations to the UK Government, including:

  • Empower farmers, environmentalists, and
other stakeholders to work together to
deliver change
  • Ensure financial security by increasing support for farmers
  • Bring farmers into the movement with a regenerative agriculture framework, and
enable them to deliver it through knowledge sharing

McCain is a member of The Sustainable Markets Initiative, which works to build a coordinated global effort to enable the private sector to accelerate the achievement of global climate, biodiversity and UN Sustainable Development Goal targets.

Within this, we are part of the Agribusiness Transition Hub, which includes companies across the food value chain, aiming to accelerate and scale the adoption of regenerative agriculture.

The Sustainable Markets Initiative’s Agribusiness Task Force seeks to unlock
a projected $1.2 trillion for regenerative agriculture, to make implementing regenerative agriculture practices
financially viable for farmers. [1]
